Why Leaders Stop Hearing Bad News Are You Surrounded by Peace, or Silence?
If telling the leader the truth consistently costs something, eventually the leader will be surrounded by people who tell him what he wants to hear.
The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
The Revelation
Ahab says something extraordinary.
There is a man who may tell him the truth.
And Ahab’s response is essentially:
👉 “I DON’T LIKE HIM.”
Why?
Because Micaiah doesn’t tell him what he wants to hear.
Think about that organizationally.
The king has power.
Micaiah has information.
But the king’s hostility toward unwelcome information creates a dangerous environment.
Eventually people learn:
👉 GOOD NEWS TRAVELS SAFELY. BAD NEWS DOESN’T.
That’s how leaders become blind while remaining completely in charge.
The Lie
“IF SOMETHING WERE REALLY WRONG, SOMEBODY WOULD TELL ME.”
Would they?
What happened the last time someone brought you bad news?
Did you:
get defensive?
blame them?
interrogate their motives?
humiliate them?
shoot the messenger?
remove access?
become cold?
retaliate later?
Because people remember.
And then:
👉 THE ORGANIZATION LEARNS YOUR EMOTIONAL PRICE FOR TRUTH.
Eventually information gets edited before it reaches you.
The Truth
👉 LEADERS NEED PEOPLE WHO CAN INTERRUPT THEIR VERSION OF REALITY.
Not constant critics.
Not cynical opposition.
Truth-tellers.
People who can say:
“We have a problem.”
“The numbers aren’t telling the whole story.”
“People are afraid.”
“This isn’t working.”
“You’re missing something.”
“You handled that badly.”
“Your decision is hurting people.”
And:
👉 “I THINK YOU’RE WRONG.”
A leader who cannot receive those sentences eventually becomes dependent upon incomplete information.
The Information Funnel
Watch the progression:
- Leader reacts badly to truth.
- People notice.
- Bad news gets softened.
- Problems get delayed.
- Reports become polished.
- Leader receives distorted reality.
- Leader makes decisions from distorted reality.
- Problems increase.
- “WHY DIDN’T ANYBODY TELL ME?”The leader wonders
The Audit
- WHAT INFORMATION AM I LEAST LIKELY TO HEAR?
- WHO CAN TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T WANT TO HEAR?
- WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE WITH ME?
- DO PEOPLE BRING ME PROBLEMS EARLY OR WAIT UNTIL THEY’RE UNAVOIDABLE?
- HAVE I CONFUSED LOYALTY WITH AGREEMENT?
Then:
👉 AM I SURROUNDED BY PEACE, OR SILENCE?
Those are not necessarily the same thing.
The Surrender
Ask someone with enough proximity to know:
“WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO TELL ME?”
Then do something difficult.
Don’t explain.
Don’t defend.
Don’t correct their perception immediately.
Listen.
Thank them.
Pray.
Examine.
Because if truth reaches you safely today, it may reach you sooner tomorrow.
Take It With You
When truth becomes expensive, information becomes distorted.
The Prayer
Father,
Protect me from becoming hostile toward truth because truth makes me uncomfortable.
Give me Micaiahs.
And give me humility to listen to them.
Make me secure enough to hear bad news.
Wise enough to test it.
Humble enough to change.
And courageous enough to act.
Don’t let my authority isolate me from reality.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
