The Battle Before The Battle

What The Leader Rewards

Your stated values describe the culture you want. Your rewards reveal the culture you are actually building.

1 Samuel 16:7
People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

Matthew 6:1
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.

The Revelation

Imagine an organization says:

โ€œPeople first.โ€

But promotions consistently go to people who produce results while destroying relationships.

What did the organization actually teach?

Results first.

A church says:

โ€œCharacter matters.โ€

But gifted leaders repeatedly receive exceptions because theyโ€™re effective.

What did the church teach?

Gift matters more.

A family says:

โ€œTell the truth.โ€

But honesty gets punished while appearance gets protected.

What did the family teach?

LOOK GOOD.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Culture eventually believes what leadership repeatedly rewards.

The Lie

โ€œPEOPLE KNOW WHAT WE VALUE BECAUSE WE TOLD THEM.โ€

No.

People watch.

Who gets promoted?

Who gets access?

Who gets praised?

Who gets protected?

Who receives exceptions?

Who gets invited back?

Who receives the microphone?

What behavior produces opportunity?

Those answers teach the actual values.

๐Ÿ‘‰ PEOPLE READ INCENTIVES MORE CAREFULLY THAN MISSION STATEMENTS.

The Truth

WHAT GETS REWARDED GETS REHEARSED.

Reward something repeatedly and people begin adapting toward it.

If only visible results receive praise,

invisible faithfulness becomes less attractive.

If charisma gets opportunity,

character may become secondary.

If constant availability gets rewarded,

boundaries begin looking like disloyalty.

If aggressive personalities advance,

gentleness begins looking weak.

If leaders protect high performers from consequences,

everyone learns:

๐Ÿ‘‰ RESULTS CAN PURCHASE EXEMPTION.

Now culture is being discipled.

Jesus Reorders Reward

Matthew 6 repeatedly exposes people doing good things:

giving.

praying.

fasting.

But doing them:

โ€œto be seenโ€ฆ.โ€

Jesus asks:

๐Ÿ‘‰ WHOSE REWARD ARE YOU SEEKING?

Kingdom formation changes what receives honor.

Not merely visibility.

Faithfulness.

Not merely charisma.

Character.

Not merely results.

Obedience.

Not merely impressive gifts.

Fruit.

Not merely who can build the biggest platform.

๐Ÿ‘‰ WHO CAN BE TRUSTED WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING?

The Leadership Audit

  • WHO GETS PROMOTED HERE?
  • WHY?
  • WHAT BEHAVIOR GETS ACCESS?
  • WHO RECEIVES EXCEPTIONS?
  • WHAT DO I PRAISE PUBLICLY?
  • WHAT DO I OVERLOOK BECAUSE SOMEONE PRODUCES RESULTS?

Then:

๐Ÿ‘‰ IF EVERYONE COPIED THE PEOPLE I REWARD, WHAT KIND OF CULTURE WOULD WE HAVE?

Thatโ€™s the test.

The Surrender

Look for something worth rewarding that normally goes unnoticed.

Integrity.

Quiet service.

Repentance.

Keeping a promise.

Developing someone else.

Telling difficult truth.

Protecting the team.

Giving away credit.

Faithfulness without applause.

Then:

๐Ÿ‘‰ HONOR IT.

Because leadership doesnโ€™t only correct culture.

Leadership teaches culture what deserves celebration.

Take It With You

Your stated values describe the culture you want. Your rewards reveal the culture you are actually building.

The Prayer

Father,

Show me where my rewards contradict my words.

Keep me from being impressed by what You are not impressed by.

Give me eyes for character.

Faithfulness.

Humility.

Truth.

Service.

Courage.

Help me reward what helps people become more like Christ.

In Jesus name,

Amen.

Hidden Gems ๐Ÿ’Ž

๐Ÿ‘‰ People read incentives more carefully than mission statements.

๐Ÿ’Ž What gets rewarded gets rehearsed.

๐Ÿ’Ž Results must never purchase exemption from character.

๐Ÿ’Ž If everyone copied the people I reward, what kind of culture would we have?

๐Ÿ’Ž Leadership teaches culture what deserves celebration.
